"Aarohanam of a Bhavyajeevan" tells the story of Mahamahopadhyaya Dr U.V. Swaminatha lyer and his inestimable services to the cause of Tamil language and literature at enormous personal sacrifice. His search for ancient palm leaf manuscripts of great classics from bygone eras, deciphering, editing and publishing them, almost single-handedly is something awe-inspiring. He used his strong foundation in music in his teaching, and was given the title of Mahamahopadhyaya and Tamil Thaatha. The publication of Civaka Cintamani with his commentaries in 1887 was a milestone in the world of Tamil literature. His publications were the result of a combination of his great Tamil scholarship under a great guru, his inspirations from western and native traditions, and his genius in combining and innovating a research methodology. Because there was no precedence for such publications, especially of literature that was at least 1500 years earlier to his period, what U.V.S. accomplished was unparalleled. His story is also that of devotion to his teacher Meenakshisundaram Pillai, and to his parents. He focused relentlessly on finding resources wherever he could, to substantiate his commentaries on ancient Tamil literature. His work in making ancient Tamil literature easily available to the general public is one of the factors for Tamil to have been recognised as a classical language.

🌺 With deep gratitude, congratulations to Devika Miss 🌺
We offer our heartfelt congratulations to V. R. Devika on her beautiful and important book, Aarohanam of a Bhavya Jeevan, on the life of U. V. Swaminatha Iyer - a man whose life’s work ensured that vast treasures of Tamil literature were rescued from disappearance and returned to the people.
Through this book, Devika brings UVeSa’s legacy alive for today’s world (for young and old readers, alike) reminding us that cultural memory must be continually retold, not archived into silence. Her writing makes the lives and contributions of those who came before us accessible, intimate, and deeply human. She has earlier authored acclaimed biographies on Rukmini Devi Arundale and Muthulakshmi Reddy, works that have received international recognition and awards.
For us at Katradi, this moment is profoundly personal. Devika has nurtured generations of artists across rural and urban worlds. At Kalavai Koot Road alone, her students, grand students, and great-grand students in learning continue to carry her pedagogy forward. This book feels like an extension of that lifelong offering - an act of care, remembrance, and responsibility.
Thank you, Devika, for being a keeper of memory, a teacher across generations, and a bridge between past and future. 💛

Namaskarams,
I just had a cursory look at your book on U Ve Sa. It's excellently presented. Kindly accept our heart felt salutations for a great effort on him . He has been long forgotten by the so called Tamil pundits. May be your book in English will revive his memories. I am carrying the book with me with intention to ask my children to read. Let them know the efforts put in by the u. Ve. Sa for revival of the language. Thanks again.

"Dear Devika , Greetings . I finished reading your book soon after I received it, but didn’t have your email or phone number. Hence the delay .
The book is absorbing from start to finish I am so glad you undertook this journey .U Ve Sa’s passion for Tamil shines as strongly as his devotion to music.
What stood out most was how vividly it captures his relentless struggle to preserve our ancient Tamil texts. Tamil wasn’t just a pursuit for him it was his very life.
This book is not only a tribute to Tamil language but also a powerful source of inspiration for any youngster striving to achieve something meaningful!
Warm regards
Lakshmi Gopal
